SWCAA’s Program Department is privileged to have been asked to collaborate with the Veterans Healthcare Center on a new endeavor, “Collaborating with Community Partners to Prevent Suicide Amongst Veterans 50 Years and Older”. The Veterans that we provide Information and Assistance to, may also be interested in receiving information pertinent to Veterans benefits which may include suicide prevention. On Tuesday, February 14th from 9:30 – 11:00 Christina Allen LCSW, will provide non-clinical training to all interested counselors. The training will include; warning signs, risk factors and access to services.

CHOICES New Counselor Training
Statewide training will be held starting April for any interested social service professionals and volunteers who wish to become CHOICES counselors. CHOICES is CT’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program which provides free, unbiased information and assistance to individuals to help them understand their healthcare insurance options through the Medicare program.

Many Farmers’ Markets and Farm Stands throughout Connecticut now can accept EBT/SNAP (Formerly known as Food Stamps). This means you will once again be able to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables that arrive more quickly and fresher than those transported long distances from other states and countries. Simply bring your EBT card to the table with the sign that says “SNAP/EBT accepted here” at participating Farmers’ Markets and Farm Stands. The Market Master will swipe your card for the amount that you want and give you Market Tokens that can be used at all the stands at that market.
We learn so much from our history. In 1974, the Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging (SWCAA) was incorporated as a 501-c-3 nonprofit organization. Its mission was simple, to promote independence and dignity for older adults. Forty years later, SWCAA continues to support older adults by helping to shape public policy, adding capacity to the regional network of aging providers and by providing direct services designed to give older adults an alternative to nursing facility care.
